Learn Graphic Design at Venice Skills Center.

You can learn Graphic Design at the Venice Skills Center. The program consists of four courses: Fundamentals, Digital Imaging,  Advertising Design and Web Design. Instruction is divided between learning design skills and technical/computer skills. Projects include logos, newsletters, brochures, posters, packaging, advertisements and digital screen-based presentations. Upon successful completion of the sequence, students will have a both a portfolio of professional-level projects and job skills that are industry-standard. Adobe CC17 (Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign) are taught on Macintosh computers. Prior Certificate or Instructor’s approval required to enroll courses 2, 3, 4.

A certificate of completion is awarded when a student demonstrates competency (“C” level work), in the core competencies of a course. What follows is a brief description of each course:

Fundamentals Project

Graphic Design 1: Fundamentals

COURSE NO.: 70-65-50 (Ad. Ed. #29-04-65)

The Fundamentals competency-based course is the first of four courses offered for graphic design. It provides technical instruction and practical experience in workplace safety, the basic principles and techniques of graphic design, print and web typography, color theory and management, elements of illustration, logo design, and branding, conceptualization of images through sketching, digital imaging software and their applications, basic word processing and resource management and employability skills.  180 hours. Graphic Design 2: Digital Imaging

COURSE NO.: 70-65-55 (Ad. Ed. #29-04-66)

PREREQUISITES: Enrollment requires successful completion of the Graphic Design (Fundamentals) (70-65-50) course, or instructor’s permission.

This competency-based course is the second in a sequence of four designed for graphic design. It provides students with technical instruction and practical experience in the creation and manipulation of still, two-dimensional images. Graphic Design 3: Advertising Design

COURSE NO.: 70-65-60 (Ad. Ed. #29-04-67)

PREREQUISITES: Enrollment requires successful completion of the Graphic Design: Digital Imaging (70-65-55) course and portfolio, or instructor’s permission.

This competency-based course, is the third in a sequence of four. Technical instruction and practical experience in fundamental advertising principles, vector-based logo design and illustrations, desktop imaging and desktop publishing applications in pre-press production, digital file management, website advertising, project presentation and delivery, and proofreading and editing. Projects include Advertising Strategy, Ad Campaign, Personal ID Package, Branding. Prerequisite: Student must pass/show competency in the course Digital Imaging in order to enroll in the course. 180 hours.

Graphic Design 4: Web Design

COURSE NO.: 70-65-65 (Ad. Ed. #29-04-68)

PREREQUISITES: Enrollment requires completion of the Graphic Design: Advertising Design (70-65-60) course and portfolio, or instructor’s permission.

This competency-based course is the last in a sequence of four designed for graphic design. It provides students with technical instruction and practical experience in workplace safety, scanning, graphic formats, color applications, utilizing graphics software, composition and writing for the Internet, proofreading and editing techniques, electronic publishing, using Dreamweaver, web page creation and designing accessible websites. Instruction also includes resource management and employability skills. Prerequisite: Student must pass/show competency in the course Advertising Design in order to enroll in the course. 180 hours.
